Diversity versus Inclusion
For many in the majority community, the term "diversity" can have negative connotations. It is associated with words like entitlement, reverse-discrimination, favoritism, unwarranted privilege, etc.
For many in the minority communities, the same word, "diversity", has a positive meaning. Many associate it with words like equality, justice, parity, balance, reciprocity, etc.
If you believe there is some truth to these opposing views, then why would it be surprising that this word, "diversity", could cause extreme emotional reactions and responses in both the majority and minority populations?
Also, our early unique environments such as home, community, and cultural influences play a significant role in shaping our views of diversity. Add to that our unique experiences and individual exposure to situations and events such as; history, education, media, social interactions and spiritual beliefs. All of these are strong influencers in how we view diversity.
Even though all of the above influence our beliefs and behaviors towards diversity, in our opinion, the most significant cause of extreme reactions and responses is that diversity is heavily focused on each other's outer appearances or characteristics; things that are readily visible. For each of us, those visible characteristics are tied to a mental recall. If that recall contains false, inccurate, or incomplete information it could prove to be a detrimental and ineffective way to determine the value, character, and integrity of another individual.
Inclusion is about creating, or improving on, a culture. It begins with understanding your own beliefs, biases, and behaviors; before moving forward to develop a deeper understanding of others.
We firmly believe that diversity can strengthen an organization. However, it is finding commonality (inclusion) that builds a sustainable organization and relationships. This holds true regardless if those commonalities are internal to your team, our external with your clients and other stakeholders.
When we began our journey as a company, we had a very clear mission in mind; build a company that recognizes the added strengths that come with diversity, but focuses on the power of inclusion. At the time we had no idea where that journey would lead us. Today, we serve our clients in two ways: 1) Providing Professional Training and Development focused on gaining the fullest advantages through a culture of inclusion. 2) Working With Businesses, Institutions, and Organizations to Help Them Successfully Grow through a culture of inclusion.
The population demographics are changing at an accelerated pace. The demographics of discretionary funds are also changing. Our Clients understand some basic facts about the successful future growth of their organizations:
1) To attract and retain talent from different backgrounds they must have a culture of inclusion
2) To enter multi-cultural markets that are not currently part, or a significant portion, of their traditional business, they must have a culture of inclusion
3) To encourage their existing Team Members to recruit actively and refer talent to the organization, they must have a culture of inclusion
Diversity is not the end-goal; it is inclusion!
